Good days and bad days

Another WIOL race and another mess-up.
1. From 7-8 started listening to Jourdan yelling at me and lost 2 minutes in the sprint part of map.
2. Just before 16 rolled/sprained my ankle.
Route gadget, Winsplits
Was close to being 5th.
Hadn't made the stupid mistake on 8, possibly could have caught Eric. Next time then.

Then there is was another administrative mess-up with my gopro. Somehow I decided to start it in picture taking regime. 4k pictures later..

Headcam O 1

2012 O-ringen, H-45. I think it is Thomas Johannesson. Pretty amazing speed.
Here is a map (I could not find the proper H45-1 map, so used one of E1 of 2012 O-ringen that I could find and drew on top):

In other news, got 3rd in WIOL race this weekend with 2 large mistakes of 2 and 1 minutes or so. Both top places were reachable. Jourdan had similar issues.

King county has new LIDAR data

New data

Since last year September or so I have been waiting for the new LIDAR data from King county. Wait is over, data is here and IT IS GREAT!

Old data

Old data was acquired around 2001-2005 and was pretty bad, Some pieces were acquired later, which made them better, but in general it was so bad, that I wrote an article on how I tried to extract goodness out of it (and failed...).

New data

It is not the absolutely greatest data in the dark forests of PNW, but it certainly is much better.

Comparison

In this picture, contours from old LIDAR data are in green; brown is the new ones: see how the ridge on the left center just disappears?

But what does it mean?

Well, if someone is into map making, then the new data is a must for all potential projects.
Forest runs is planning on updating the following old maps: Tiger Mt N downhill , Houghton transfer station of HBOC; Will Enger's Kirkland watershed, if we get hands on it. And add nice contours on the new map of middle Tiger Mt.

Final test run

Before the US team trials I created two more sample courses for Will Enger and friends.

This is the last version of map being published before the race on September 4.

What happened this week?

Will Enger ran the second course, not sure how the third course will look like or when.

Teanaway NE

We are working on Teanaway maps - one I am keeping in secret for a public race, the other - public for everyone to enjoy before that. Here is first version:
The map/course is made w/o ever being there.
Will Enger went for a run this weekend. We will update the map with what he saw. If you go there, please let us know - we can likely provide you with a new version! Or, if you need to know more about it - please comment here.

WIOL Championship Race

I arrived to the race location somewhat early and was first when finished. However - I had some small bubbles here and there, and also the I noticed my speed is not up yet. So the 35 minute time was OK, but no high hopes.
At the end of the day I came in 4th, behind Jourdan, Will and Eric. And above Eric, Patrick and Nikolay. I would call it a decent, but uninspired run.
Small bubbles - I was not very confident at the start, but kept moving forward; I caught up with Matt around 8-9; 12 messed with me - map was missing some trails there, after decided to do some straight-in-forest run, where staying on trail would have been wisest. Probably my biggest messup.
I am very happy I could do the run!
